Do You Know Your Representatives?
Well, Dheeraj Eidnani, a fifth grader in Mrs. Snow’s class and a TAG student in Mrs. Bowers’ class, sure does.  For the last year, he has been working on a project called Know Your Representatives.  It sorts and filters the representatives according to their party, district, committees, appropriations sub-committees, building, occupation, the year they became a representative,
spouse, and other vital statistics. You can also view their phone, zip code, their webpage, Facebook page, and biography. He used a program called Pivot by Microsoft to create the project.

The summer before he began this project, he received a book about Star Wars facts. Dheeraj’s dad taught him how to use Pivot so that he could scan the pictures and enter the information about Star Wars characters for his first project.  A year later, he became curious about why lawmakers were arguing about the deficit. As he began researching, he became inspired to create a Pivot program about the representatives.  It took him a whole summer to do it.

Since creating the project, he has made several trips to the Georgia State Capitol. He showed his program to Chuck Martin (representative for Alpharetta) and explained his project.  Rep. Martin liked it so much that he called his friend Mr. Marshall, who is the assistant to the Speaker of the House.  Dheeraj was encouraged to apply as a page and gave messages from the representatives to the lobbyists.  He has also shown his project to the clerk, the Speaker of the House, and 4 or 5 other
representatives.  His next step is to show it to all 180 representatives.

Currently, he is working on the senators and will then add some information, including how they vote on bills (green for yes and red for no), whether they are present or absent, and which bills they passed and when. Currently, the representatives and senators record votes on an old electronic system.  Dheeraj’s project would allow them to view this information digitally and can be accessed remotely.  He hopes that his project will be implemented by the state of Georgia during the next session and
that they will set up an educational account for him in order to compensate him for all of his hard work. Eventually he would like to implement this project for all 50 states and 2 territories in the country.
